Growing beets
Space individual plants 3 to 4 inches apart. (They will not develop properly if left in clumps.)
Before planting, add some general purpose fertilizer to the soil.
Beets need evenly moist soil to develop properly.
Harvest the roots when they are the size you like. Smaller beetroots are more tender; if left in the ground too long they may become woody. The tops are delicious in salads or lightly cooked.
PLEASE NOTE: The plants on my farm table have NOT been hardened off. They are straight from the greenhouse.
You can do one of the following:
1. Expose them gradually to outdoor conditions over a week
-OR (as I do)-
2. Plant them immediately and give them protection from excess sun, wind, and rain for a week or two.
Touchstone Gold - beet
53 days. Our favorite yellow beet! Touchstone Gold is outstanding and uniformly round, with smooth, bright orange skin and a dazzling vivid golden interior. The deep green, blond-veined tops are equally appealing and perfectly matched to the beet’s smooth, exquisitely sweet flesh. It performed noticeably better than other golden beets in our trials.
Open pollinated variety. (Territorial Seed)
Spring Color Blend - beet
51-65 days. Beets, like Swiss Chard, are being rediscovered for their enormous health benefits, including folic acid, vitamin C, fiber, and more. Now you can experiment in the colorful and nutritious world of beets from just this one assortment of seeds. May include Red Ace, a deep red; Bolder, a stunning golden; Albino, a crisp white; and Chioggia, the ‘candy-striped’ beet.
F1 hybrid. (Territorial Seed)
